The Dongguan Filipino Community kicked off the year with a special event on Labour Day, May 1, 2024, themed as Salo-salo day. Salo-salo, which means a gathering of people with food and activities, was truly special and memorable for all who attended. The turnout exceeded our expectations, and we were pleasantly surprised by the number of attendees who joined us for this meaningful event. We are grateful for the 34 Filipinos who took the time to be part of this simple yet significant gathering.
The event featured a raffle organized by the enthusiastic Dennis from Trenz Padala, and karaoke singing that kept the crowd entertained. However, the highlight of the day was the food potluck, where delicious Filipino dishes were provided by everyone who contributed. The culinary talents of our community members added to the warmth and joy of the gathering, making it a truly memorable experience.
In addition to celebrating unity, the gathering also served as a platform to encourage suggestions from the Filipino community. Attendees shared their ideas, with one notable suggestion being to centralize the solicitation function to standardize the format. This proposal aims to streamline the process of seeking contributions for community initiatives, ensuring transparency and efficiency in fundraising efforts.
Furthermore, the community members expressed their desire for the consulate’s support in their endeavours. They plan to reach out to the consulate to explore potential collaborations and assistance, e.g. events; that could further empower their organization and its initiatives. By leveraging the resources and networks of the consulate, the community hopes to amplify their impact and reach a wider audience.
Excitement filled the air as attendees eagerly discussed the upcoming Zumba and sports fest events. These activities promise to bring the community together in a spirit of fun and healthy competition. The anticipation for these events reflects the community’s enthusiasm for engaging in activities that promote wellness, camaraderie, and cultural pride.
During the event, we shared new beginnings and plans for the community, discussing existing policies that will be slightly changed and implemented in the future.
